Immediate (otherwise referred to as temporary) dentures are fitted on the same day as tooth extraction. They differ from full acrylic dentures in that they are not totally personally customised and as such will not look or fit in the same way your final dentures will, they are generally recommended for patients undergoing extensive extractions.
Why do people require to have immediate dentures
Patients may elect for immediate dentures as they provide coverage, immediately filling the gaps left from major or full mouth extractions. They can also offer the healing gums protection and minimise blood loss.
What are the clinical and laboratory steps for making immediate denture
- During initial consultations, your dentist will make impressions taking note of your bite form, measure your upper and lower jaw and record the color and shape of your natural teeth
- Typically, In the scenario of a full mouth extraction. The dentist will remove your back teeth first and allow the mouth to heal, as they are minimally visible. Next a secondary impression may be taken and your immediate dentures crafted in a similar way to traditional dentures, however they will not bare the same detail or longevity of permanent dentures.
- Once the front teeth have been extracted the immediate dentures will be fitted and need to remain in place for approximately 24 hours before first removal.
